Discover The Recipes You Are Using And Abandon Them
Keira Alexandra, Sundance Channel
In 1975 Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt created a desk of cards called Oblique Strategies when they found they both needed to jog their minds during stressful work situations. Story is the vital ingredient in making a successful animated movie. But the Pixar definition of “story” isn’t limited to ink on paper. Keith Stichweh will provide a behind-the-scenes journey from the initial concept to the final film seen in the cinema.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (excerpt)
The oldest existing (and possibly first) full-length animated film was the creation of female director Lotte Reiniger (b. Germany, 1899). She cut figures out of black cardboard with a pair of scissors, then joined movable parts with thread to animate them.

This interstitial segment highlights recent motion design projects from young studios in the UK, Scandinavia, France, Germany and the Netherlands who are bravely pummeling pixels into brand new shapes.

Filmmaking With Machinima
Paul Marino and Katie Salen
Machinima (machine cinema) is both a collection of associated production techniques and a film genre which offers the potential of rendering computer-generated imagery (CGI) using low-end 3D engines in video games. It is a convergence of filmmaking, animation and game development where the established ideas of motion graphics are being questioned.

Electronic Gaming
The gaming industry continues to trample Hollywood in gross sales per year and part of the reason is the superlative production values and narrative scope of the support materials that introduce or promote games. We’ll screen three cinematics, and one promotional animation, which are all noteworthy for their mastery of the tools of animated filmmaking and storytelling.

Get Lucky With Friends With You
Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval, Friends With You
Sam and Arturo both have a grand mixture of fine art and design backgrounds. They combined forces in 2002 and have been spreading their art around the globe ever since. In their performance/presentation they have one concept in mind—to become Friends With You.
